One Night Only...Every Year

Any time is a good time to be in Paris.

But if you’re looking for an excuse to wander the streets with a plastic cup in hand while following the distant sound of bass into the night, may I suggest June 21st. The summer solstice.

It’s on this night — any year, every year — that Paris transforms into one giant open-air concert for Fête de la Musique, the citywide music festival launched by the French Ministry of Culture in 1982 that has since spread to more than 120 countries. Yet somehow Paris still feels like the center of it all.

One year, I opened my front door to find a two-man rock band performing directly outside my apartment building. Later, while crossing the Seine, I stumbled into a percussion ensemble playing the Village People’s YMCA so enthusiastically it felt less like music and more like a small uprising. Ten minutes later? A parade of puppeteers dancing giant cardboard Lion King animals down the street while Circle of Life blasted from portable speakers. Honestly, how do you not sing along?

At some point, you just surrender to the chaos.

Think Coachella, if Coachella had fewer influencers, more accordions, and no ticket price. Because remarkably, it’s all free.

For larger performances, head toward the Jardin des Tuileries or the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower. But honestly, some of the best moments happen entirely by accident — in Montmartre stairways, along the Seine, outside bars, under bridges, halfway down a side street. It’s an evening to experience, not overplan.

Official festivities generally begin around 6:00 p.m. and continue until midnight-ish, though Paris has always treated “official hours” more as a philosophical suggestion.

Attire? Parisian summer chic, naturellement. Mindset? A willingness to follow the music wherever it leads.
